Why does my grout keep getting dirty so quickly?
This article on Tile and Grout Cleaning Geelong will be sure to help. This question is at the top of most people’s mind. Grout always seems to accumulate dirt and soils very quickly. But why is this? Grout, being porous, is composed of cement (sometimes colored) and sand. This property allows water, liquids and dirt to penetrate into the grout from above, which causes the grout cement to discolor.
The best way to slow or stop dirty grout lines?
However, dirt buildup can be prevented. One remedy is to seal the grout lines with a sealer. Most decent grout sealers can be found at your local hardware stores. But what is the best type of grout sealer to use?
– Penetrating Grout Sealers is great for most situations. This grout will soak through the top of the grout layer and form an impenetrable barrier. This sealer is sometimes called impregnator sealer. One important point is that this sealer cannot be used on top of the same type of sealer. If the grout cannot absorb any more sealer, then you need to use a surface-based sealant.
– Water and Silicone Sealers: The sealers are popular and can be easy to apply. They are still resistant to age and tiles will need to be sealed after three years. This sealant is not a great choice for areas with high moisture, like bathrooms or toilets.
– Acrylic Sealers: These synthetic sealers are the most durable. Although more expensive than water and silicone sealants, you may not have to re-seal for six to ten years. The sealer is toxic and emits fumes. Wear gloves, safety glasses and a mask.
When in doubt it is best to call a Tile and Grout Professional or consult with a customer service technician at your local hardware store. Specialized tile retailers are also a good source of information.
